Monday June 10 2019-5:00 A.M. is when my alarm clock woke me up! I have till 8:30 A.M. to make it to work. I already had my morning routine planned out, which was to cook breakfast and also prepare a pack lunch. Once it hit 6:00 A.M. I was already out in the drive way and ready to roll. Having recently moved to from Pasay to Pasig I estimated that I’d be to work by 7:30 A.M. at the latest, as it also reflected from Waze. As soon as I got to Ortigas Ave. I was in for a shock!
The traffic was in a standstill and you have all sorts of vehicles in the road from buses, jeepneys, UV’s, PUJ’s, cargo trucks, and hundreds of motorcycles zig zagging across any openings they could find. It was chaotic and I was getting nervous that I would be late on my first day. When I finally reached the overpass heading to C-5 around 7:15 A.M. I thought there was still hope, but as soon as I took the exit from the left, I laughed out of hopelessness. Another stage of traffic awaited for me and all I could do was rage silently behind the wheel and pray that I make it in time.
8:15 A.M. I made it! I got to Maybank right on time. Having survived my first two hour traffic commute in the Philippines I think I deserve a certificate of recognition.
As a new intern, the first step was to head on up to the 2nd floor and proceed to the talent acquisition office. I was greeted by the HR and was given some forms to sign regarding company policies. After that I was told to wait, once someone from the IT Admin come pick me up. Sir Ritchel was the one who showed up and he was also the one that interviewed me. He led me to the IT Admin office and I was introduced to my supervisors and workmates.
I was immediately assigned to shadow with one of the IT technician and he was very helpful and tried his best to speak english to me. It was also my first time ever hearing the phrase “you spoken in dollar” it was hilarious hearing my workmates trying to english and just having a good joke. I thought that the workers would be strict and engaged on some computer work but it wasn’t like that. Sir Jovs who I was shadowing toured me around the building and explained a few things they do as ITs. As we got back to the office he then led me to one of the computers and started teaching me on the basic troubleshootings ie; microsoft outlook configuration, PC Lockout, application installation and remote access control. It took awhile for me to comprehend the process but it was expected for a new intern, and he said that I would pick it up in a few days.
Fast forward to 5:30 PM. I made it through my first day and my head was hurting from all the information that I had to process. Still, I couldn’t ask for a better first day, minus the traffic. I came in not knowing anything and I left knowing to many things that I still could not process haha.
